Don't Be Lured Into a Phishing Scam |
|

Not So Funny Money
Summer is a time to go fishing. But unfortunately, there also seems to be a rapid growth
in phishing. "Phishing"
is a form of identity theft which tricks Internet users
into divulging their personal data through e-mails which link to counterfeit Web
sites. The counterfeit sites are forged to look just
like the sites of reputable companies such as PayPal and Citibank. Luckily, you do not need to purchase expensive
software to protect yourself against phishing expeditions. The
best protection against these scams is education. Here are some suggestions offered in the
current issue of Consumer Reports:
- Never trust an unsolicited e-mail that requests
personal or sensitive information. Legitimate companies do not do this.
- If there is any question, contact the bank or financial
site directly.
- Avoid counterfeit sites by entering Web addresses
into the browser yourself. Do not
use the supplied link.
- When prompted for a password, give an incorrect
one first. A phishing
scam site will accept it - a legitimate site won't.
- Forward fraudulent SPAM
to the Federal Trade Commission:
spam@uce.gov and the Anti-Phishing Working Group: reportphishing@antiphishing.org.
Enjoy the rest of your Summer. Now if there
was something we could do about all this rain... |

I
found love on the Internet! Meet
Nikko - the newest love
in my life. He's been through two divorces, lived in
a car for 6 months, is blind in one eye and dumb as a bag of rocks. But
he also is a very sweet boy - so one look at that handsome smile makes everything
ok. I
found Nikko on Petfinder.com,
which lists pets that are available for adoption in shelters and rescue organizations
across the country. Did you know that almost 5 million dogs enter shelters
each year. Sadly, only about half ever find a new home.
So next time you are considering a pet, remember adopted dogs (and cats and horses...)
have lots of love to give. You can give one a second (or in Nikko's case - a third)
chance. Check
out the Petfinder.com Web site. Who knows - you may find love on the Internet
too! Petfinder.com

What is a Web
Designer? |
| |
|
A web designer solves problems. The design
process starts with clearly defined goals and a series of problems related to
those goals. Information and images must be presented,
and at the same time, the site must load quickly and be easy to use and navigate.
To maintain a solution-oriented, problem-solving
approach, there must be a purpose for every decision. The decision must meet the
goals of the site, not the goals of the designer's ego. This is not the time to
show off the latest and greatest technology unless it serves a purpose. The most
stunning graphics and flashy technology in the world can quickly lose their appeal
if users cannot find the information they are looking for. In the end, how good the Web site looks reflects
how creatively the designer finds solutions to the problems presented. And
that is what makes it fun! More about Annette
