To get the right
answers, you must ask the right questions.
Many of us have problems finding old files
on our own computer, so how can we easily find relevant information in the billions
(billions!) of Web pages that make up the "global hard drive" of the
Internet? The main problem is not that the search engines
and the search directories find too little information, but that they find too
much. Here are some QUICK BASIC TIPS for more successful
searching: (These tips will
work with most search engines in their basic search option. ) - Use the plus (+) and minus (-) signs in front of
words to force their inclusion and/or exclusion in searches. (NO space between the sign and the keyword.)
- Use double quotation marks (" ") around
phrases to ensure they are searched exactly as is,with the words side by side in the same
order. (Do NOT put quotation marks around a single word.)
- Put your most important keywords first in the string.
There are many more advanced
searching methods, but these basic tips should prove helpful to the average
Web searcher. Have you tried searching for your name in
Google? If I search for Annette Riley, I get 1,150,000
results. But if I Google "Annette
Riley" +Lockport I get only 45. And most of
them are me! Try it with your own name! Google
