Be More Successful When Searching the Web

To get the right answers, you must ask the right questions.

Many of us have problems finding old files on our own computer, so how can we easily find relevant information in the billions (billions!) of Web pages that make up the "global hard drive" of the Internet?

The main problem is not that the search engines and the search directories find too little information, but that they find too much.

Here are some QUICK BASIC TIPS for more successful searching: (These tips will work with most search engines in their basic search option. )

  • Use the plus (+) and minus (-) signs in front of words to force their inclusion and/or exclusion in searches. (NO space between the sign and the keyword.)
  • Use double quotation marks (" ") around phrases to ensure they are searched exactly as is,with the words side by side in the same order. (Do NOT put quotation marks around a single word.)
  • Put your most important keywords first in the string.

There are many more advanced searching methods, but these basic tips should prove helpful to the average Web searcher.

Have you tried searching for your name in Google?

If I search for Annette Riley, I get 1,150,000 results. But if I Google "Annette Riley" +Lockport I get only 45. And most of them are me!

Try it with your own name!

Believe It...Or Not...

We all have a well-meaning friend or two that diligently forwards email warnings and other news. Very often, these items are hoaxes or "Internet Legends." Sometimes they are legitimate, even helpful. How to tell the difference?

There are many "myth-busting" Web sites. Here are a few that I have used:

Web Design Tip

Keep your Web site up-to-date with fresh content.

Spring is almost here! I'm sure we will all be glad to see something besides snow when we look out the window.

This is a good time to do some "Spring cleaning" on your Web site. It is important to add fresh content now and then to keep it from getting stale.

You should update your site whenever you:

  • offer new products or services
  • change prices or shipping policies
  • change hours, staff or contact information
  • have anything of value you want to share with your customers

Easy ways to do this: Have a "What's New" section on your Home Page to draw attention to these changes. You can also offer articles, helpful resources or event listings, but make sure that the content stays current.

I update and maintain many of the Web sites I design. This relationship with my clients is one of the things I enjoy most about what I do.

If you need help updating or maintaining your Web site and you don't feel you have the time, staff or expertise to do this yourself, give me a call or email. I have flexible and affordable support options to provide your business with just the right level of help.
