Easy Ways to Use Dropbox

I recently started using Dropbox. Dropbox is a popular cloud storage service. Its free version is geared towards consumers, but can be just as useful for small businesses. There is a paid version available for business as well. There is also an app for your phone.

I have been using the free version. Here are some useful features:

  • Do you often work from different locations?  I have an office in Lockport and also have a computer to work on at my home office.  I can put files I need for both places in a folder in Dropbox and have an updated version to work on whenever I need it.
  • Do you send large attachments via email? If I have a very large attachment or a group of photos to send to a client, I can put them in a folder in Dropbox and send a link giving access to that folder to the intended recipient. They can download the files from there, so I don't have to worry about files being too big to email.
  • It can be a good way to collaborate with many people. In the above example, the recipients can view the photos and only download the ones they want; or they can review and give an opinion without having to download any of them.

Is it safe to use?  In keeping with safe online practices, you will want a strong password - that you do not use for any other accounts - and that you change regularly. These are things  you should do anyway for all your online accounts.  I personally wouldn't upload sensitive documents like my tax returns, etc. With common sense and good practices, Dropbox can be a useful resource.

There are many uses for Dropbox, but even just the convenience of not having to worry about sending large files via email makes it worth a try. It's free and easy to use. You can find it at this link:
