Sometimes You Find Your Niche.

Sometimes Your Niche Finds You.

You can't be all things to all people.  A business person will have more success when they know who their client is and make marketing decisions accordingly.

In my case, my niche found me.  When I was first starting out, I had no real focus.  I would do a website for just about anyone, although I preferred to only work with really nice people. (How's that for a business plan?)

Things were different back then.  The Web was younger. Options, as far as what you could do and who could do it, were much more limited.

Not anymore.  Now there are so many options to choose from that it can be overwhelming.  Not just the website business, this applies to your business as well.  You can have competition from people and places you have never even heard of.

My clients come from diverse business backgrounds and include a wide variety of small businesses and non-profit organizations

Customers come and go, but most have stayed with me for many years. My happy customers refer me to new customers that are a great fit, and the circle continues. That is an added benefit of finding your niche - it works both ways- you will more easily find someone who is an ideal client for you also!

So what exactly is my niche?   I have many years experience working in small business settings, and now I am a small business person too. Because of this experience, I can relate to what my clients are trying to do and ask the right questions to understand what makes them special and what they need to accomplish their goals.

My niche has become:

  • small businesses and organizations
  • run by really nice people
  • who need and appreciate my guidance and expertise
  • trust that I will find and provide the best solution for their situation
  • and know they can depend on me to be there for them in the future.

What is your niche? You are not just a store or a restaurant or a service. Every business has something about it that makes it stand out from the rest.

Don't try to be everything to everyone. Celebrate and showcase what makes you unique.  People are out there, waiting just for YOU!

 Say Cheese!

I absolutely HATE having my picture taken.  I have been this way since I was old enough to run away from a camera.  My poor mother has only a handful of photos from my childhood.

I encourage my clients to put their photos on their websites to personalize it and instill trust in their business.  I myself have made online purchases because a photo of the owner was on the site.

I recently acquired a new client and was trying to persuade her to put her photo on her website.  I could see it in her eyes that she hated being photographed almost as much as I do.

I realized the time had come to walk my talk. It was time to have my photo taken and upload it to my website.

Honestly, I would rather have made an appointment for a root canal, but I contacted Debbie Sammarco of Canal Side Photography (website:  www.canalsidephotography.com).

Her studio is the Market Street Art Center complex also.  We took some formal shots and then some photos in my office.  Debbie helped make it as painless as possible. Then I put a photo on my website, right on the home page!
